Inbox
Smart or classic inbox
Choose between the smart inbox, which puts people first, and the classic inbox, which shows everything by date.
Heron offers two ways to display your inbox. The smart inbox (on by default) puts emails written by people first and bundles the rest. The classic inbox shows every email, newest first.
What the smart inbox does
Every incoming email is sorted into one of three categories:
- People: emails written by someone. They stay in the main list.
- Notifications: sign-in codes, receipts, alerts from a service…
- Newsletters: newsletters and mailing lists.
Notifications and newsletters are grouped in two bundles at the top of the inbox. Open a bundle to see what’s inside, then go back with Inbox.
Switch views
On desktop, click the list title (for example “All Inboxes”), then pick:
- Smart: people first, notifications and newsletters bundled;
- Classic: every email, newest first.
You can also go to Settings → General → Inbox and use the Smart inbox switch. On mobile, it’s in Settings → Inbox.
This setting is synced across all your devices.
Fix how a sender is sorted
An email landed in the wrong place? On desktop, right-click the message → Move to → People, Notifications or Newsletters. Future emails from that sender will follow.
To review these rules, open Settings → Senders: the Sorted senders section lists them, and Remove rule deletes one.
Good to know: with the smart inbox, you can also count only people in badges and alerts. See People-only badges.
