Update Heron
Heron updates itself on desktop. Here’s how it works, how to check manually, and what to do if the restart hangs.
On this page
On Mac, Windows and Linux, Heron checks for updates on its own: at launch, then every 6 hours. You decide when to install them.
When an update is available
- A A new version of Heron is available window shows up, with What’s new. Click Download (or Later).
- The download happens in the background: you can keep using Heron.
- When it’s ready, Heron offers Restart Now. An Update ready pill also stays visible in the app.
If you don’t restart right away, the update installs automatically the next time you quit Heron.
Check for an update yourself
- Settings → General → About Heron → Check for Updates. Your current version is shown there too.
- Or from the menu: Heron → Check for Updates… on Mac, Help → Check for Updates… on Windows and Linux.
The restart doesn’t happen?
On some older versions, Heron may stay open after Restart Now. In that case:
- Quit Heron completely: ⌘ Q on Mac. On Windows and Linux, right-click the Heron icon next to the clock → Quit (closing the window isn’t enough, Heron keeps running in the background).
- Open Heron again: the new version installs on quit and starts.
If nothing works, download the latest version from heronmailapp.com and install it over the old one: your mailboxes and settings are kept on your account. See Install Heron.
“Update required”
If your version is too old to work with the service, Heron shows Update required and offers Update. Install the latest version to continue.
On iPhone, iPad and Android
Small updates arrive right in the app: a New version available window offers Download, then Restart now (otherwise it applies at next launch). You can also check in Settings → About → Check for updates. Bigger versions come through the App Store or Google Play.
Check or download failed
Check your Internet connection, then click Try Again. A corporate proxy or firewall can block downloads: in that case, install the new version manually from the website.
